Short Answer Questions (2-3 Marks)

  • Q: Find the zeroes of x² - 7x + 10 and verify the relationship between zeroes and coefficients.
    Ans: x² - 7x + 10 = (x-2)(x-5) = 0. Zeroes: α = 2, β = 5. Verification: Sum of zeroes = α + β = 2 + 5 = 7 = -(-7)/1 = -b/a ✓. Product of zeroes = αβ = 2 × 5 = 10 = 10/1 = c/a ✓.
  • Q: If α and β are zeroes of p(x) = 2x² + 5x + k, and α² + β² = 21/4, find k.
    Ans: Sum: α + β = -5/2. Product: αβ = k/2. α² + β² = (α+β)² - 2αβ = (-5/2)² - 2(k/2) = 25/4 - k. Given: 25/4 - k = 21/4. k = 25/4 - 21/4 = 4/4 = 1. So k = 1.

Exam Tips for This Chapter

  • Revise all definitions and laws from Polynomials — they are commonly asked as 1-2 mark questions
  • Practice diagrams related to Polynomials — neat labelled diagrams carry 2-3 marks
  • For numericals, always show formula → substitution → answer with correct units
  • Previous year analysis shows Polynomials carries 8-12 marks in the board exam
