Engineering Entrance Exams
Engineering remains the most sought-after career path for science students in India. Multiple national and state-level exams provide entry into thousands of engineering colleges. Here are the key ones you should know about:
1. JEE Main 2027
The Joint Entrance Examination (Main) is India's largest engineering entrance exam, serving as the gateway to NITs, IIITs, and Government-Funded Technical Institutions (GFTIs). It is also the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced (IIT admission). Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), JEE Main is held twice a year — in January and April — giving students two chances to improve their score.
Session 1
January 21–30, 2027
Session 2
April 1–10, 2027
- Applicants: ~13.5 lakh candidates registered for Session 1 (2027), with over 13 lakh appearing

2. JEE Advanced 2027
JEE Advanced is the exam for admission to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Only the top 2.5 lakh rank holders in JEE Main qualify to appear for JEE Advanced. The exam is known for its challenging, concept-based questions that test deep understanding rather than rote memorisation.
- Exam Date: May 17, 2027 (Sunday)

Medical Entrance Exams
5. NEET UG 2027
The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) is the single gateway for admission to all MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, and nursing programmes across India. With over 24 lakh registrations annually, NEET is India's most competitive entrance exam by sheer numbers. Conducted by NTA in offline (pen-and-paper) mode, it is a single-day, single-shift exam that determines the future of every aspiring doctor in the country.

University Admissions — CUET UG
6. CUET UG 2027
The Common University Entrance Test (CUET UG) has transformed undergraduate admissions in India. Introduced in 2022, CUET replaced individual entrance exams for 260+ central, state, and private universities including all 45 Central Universities (Delhi University, JNU, BHU, Jamia, AMU, etc.). It is now India's second-largest entrance exam after NEET.
- Exam Dates: May 11–31, 2027 (multiple shifts)
- Mode: Computer-Based Test (CBT)
- Applicants: ~15 lakh+ registrations expected

May is the busiest month — with NEET, JEE Advanced, CUET, BITSAT, COMEDK, WBJEE, IPMAT, and CA Foundation all concentrated in a single month. Plan your preparation timeline carefully to avoid burnout.
Preparation Strategy & Tips
With so many exams happening between January and May, smart planning is essential. Here are proven strategies that work across multiple competitive exams:
1. Identify Overlapping Syllabi
JEE Main, BITSAT, MHT-CET, and VITEEE share 80%+ syllabus with Class 11–12 PCM. Preparing for JEE automatically covers most state CETs. Similarly, NEET syllabus overlaps significantly with Class 11–12 Biology and Chemistry.
2. Start with NCERT, Then Expand
NCERT textbooks form the foundation for JEE, NEET, CUET, and most exams. Master NCERT first, then move to reference books. For JEE: HC Verma (Physics), MS Chouhan (Organic Chemistry), Cengage (Maths).
3. Take Mock Tests Religiously
Mock tests build exam temperament, improve time management, and reveal weak areas. Aim for at least 1 full-length mock test per week in the final 3 months. Analyse every mock test thoroughly — review is more important than the score.
4. Don't Spread Yourself Too Thin
Pick 2–3 primary exams and 2–3 backup exams. Preparing for JEE + BITSAT + MHT-CET makes sense. Preparing for JEE + NEET + CLAT + CA Foundation simultaneously does not. Focus wins over breadth.
Ideal Preparation Timeline
- Class 11 (Start Early): Build strong conceptual foundations. Complete NCERT thoroughly. Join a coaching institute or reliable online programme
- Class 12 (First Half): Cover remaining syllabus while revising Class 11 topics. Start taking chapter-wise tests
- Class 12 (Second Half): Intensive revision, previous year papers, and full-length mock tests. Focus on weak areas
- After Board Exams: 4–6 weeks of pure competitive exam preparation. Solve 2–3 mock tests daily. Revise formulae and key concepts
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I prepare for JEE and NEET simultaneously?
Technically yes, since Physics and Chemistry overlap significantly. However, JEE requires Mathematics while NEET requires Biology — preparing for both means studying 4 subjects at advanced level. This is extremely difficult and generally not recommended unless you are exceptionally strong in all four subjects. Most toppers focus on one path.
Which competitive exams can commerce students give after 12th?
Commerce students have several excellent options: CUET UG (for DU, BHU, JNU, and 260+ universities), CA Foundation (chartered accountancy), CS Foundation (company secretary), CLAT (law at NLUs), IPMAT (management at IIMs), NPAT (NMIMS), and SAT/IELTS for studying abroad. Commerce is no longer a “safe” option — it is a launchpad for some of the highest-paying careers in India.
Is CUET mandatory for Delhi University admission?
Yes. Since 2022, CUET UG is mandatory for admission to all undergraduate programmes at Delhi University, JNU, BHU, Jamia Millia Islamia, and all other Central Universities. Class 12 board marks are used only for eligibility (minimum percentage), not for merit ranking. Your CUET score determines your admission.
How many competitive exams should I attempt after 12th?
Focus on 2–3 primary exams within the same domain and 2–3 backup options. For example, a PCM student might target JEE Main (primary), JEE Advanced (stretch goal), BITSAT and MHT-CET (backups). Attempting too many exams across different domains (engineering + law + management) dilutes preparation and rarely yields good results in any.
Can arts students give competitive exams after 12th?
Absolutely. Arts students can appear for CUET UG (BA programmes at top universities), CLAT (law — no science/maths required), NID DAT (design), NIFT (fashion design), NDA (defence), IPMAT (management at IIMs), and SAT/IELTS (study abroad). Many of these lead to careers with salaries of ₹10–30+ LPA.
Is coaching necessary for competitive exams?
Not always, but it helps significantly for exams like JEE and NEET where competition is extreme. Good coaching provides structured preparation, expert guidance, regular testing, and peer learning. For exams like CUET, CLAT, and CA Foundation, self-study with the right resources is very achievable. The key is having a structured plan, quality study material, and regular practice — whether through coaching or self-study.
What is the easiest competitive exam after 12th?
No competitive exam is truly “easy,” but in terms of lower competition ratios, exams like VITEEE, COMEDK, and state CETs are more accessible than JEE or NEET. CUET is also relatively approachable since it tests NCERT-level knowledge. CA Foundation has a moderate difficulty level with a ~30–35% pass rate. The right question is not “which is easiest” but “which aligns best with my strengths and career goals.”
