Structure of RC in Board Exams

  • CBSE Class 10/12: 2 passages; factual and literary types; 10 marks each typically
  • ICSE Class 10: unseen passage + poem; comprehensive questions test multiple skills
  • Question types: direct retrieval (1–2 marks), inference (2–3 marks), vocabulary (1 mark each)

Skimming and Scanning

  • Skimming: read the first and last sentence of each paragraph; get gist in 2–3 minutes
  • Scanning: look for specific information (names, dates, numbers) without reading everything
  • Strategy: skim whole passage (2 min) → read questions → scan for answers

Answering Direct Questions

  • Direct questions: answer found in passage; quote or paraphrase with line reference
  • Never use your own knowledge outside the passage; only text evidence counts
  • Use exact words from passage in your answer; marks are for 'from the passage'

Answering Inference Questions

  • Inference: what does the author imply or suggest that is not directly stated
  • Look for: tone (sarcastic, ironic), author's point of view, cause-effect relationships implied
  • Formula: 'The author implies ___ because the text states ___'

Vocabulary Questions

  • Meaning from context: look at words before and after the unfamiliar word
  • Antonym questions: find the opposite from options; same context applies
  • Synonym questions: replace word in sentence; check if meaning changes

Summary Writing

  • Identify main idea of each paragraph (1 sentence per para)
  • Combine into coherent 80–100 word summary; no examples or direct quotes
  • Summary must be in your own words; paraphrase, don't copy

Practice Plan

  • Read 1 editorial per day (The Hindu, Indian Express); try to summarise in 3 sentences
  • Do 2 practice RC passages per week; time yourself: 15 minutes for 10-mark passage
  • Review errors: categorise mistakes (comprehension, inference, vocabulary) and focus on weakest area
