Understanding Marking Scheme
- Examiners mark point-by-point; each sub-point typically ½ to 1 mark
- CBSE marking scheme available online; download and study before exam
- Examiners spend 2–3 minutes per paper; presentation affects marks significantly
Answer Format by Question Type
- 1-mark questions: 1 complete sentence; never one word (unless asked to fill blank)
- 3-mark questions: 3 distinct points; 3–4 sentences; no need for heading
- 5-mark questions: introduction (1 sentence), 4–5 points (2–3 sentences each), diagram if relevant
Writing Definitions and Laws
- State the law/definition exactly as in NCERT; paraphrase risks losing marks
- Include: name of law/concept, the statement, unit/formula if applicable, example if asked
- CBSE standard for 1-mark: 'State Ohm's Law' → 'At constant temperature, current through a conductor is directly proportional to voltage across it.'
Diagrams and Illustrations
- Draw diagrams in pencil; labels in pen; use ruler for straight lines
- Label all parts; include direction arrows where relevant (circuits, force diagrams, ray optics)
- CBSE Biology: neat, proportionate diagrams; wrong label = 0 for that diagram
Solving Numericals in Board Exams
- Step 1: State given quantities with units
- Step 2: State formula; Step 3: Substitute values; Step 4: Calculate; Step 5: Write answer with unit
- Never skip steps: each step has partial marks; show dimensional analysis if asked
Common Presentation Mistakes
- Not leaving space between answers (makes script look cramped)
- Using red/green pen (examiners use these; blue/black ink only for student)
- Starting new question on fresh line; leaving ruled section blank at end of answer space
Time Management in Board Exams
- Allocate time: 10 marks per 10 minutes as rule of thumb for 3-hour/100-mark exam
- Attempt all questions; partial answers always better than blank; attempt and move on
- First 15 minutes (reading time in CBSE/ICSE): plan which questions to attempt first
