What's New in 2026-27?

The ICSE Class 10 English Language syllabus for 2026-27 continues the CISCE emphasis on competency-based assessment. Chapter-wise Detailed Syllabus

1. Composition (Essay Writing)

Students must write an essay on one topic chosen from a selection of 5-6 options. Topics typically cover narrative, descriptive, argumentative, and reflective types. Essays should be 300-350 words with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. The 2026-27 pattern gives extra credit for original thinking and well-structured arguments.

2. Letter / Email / Notice Writing

This section tests formal communication skills. Students may be asked to write a formal letter to a newspaper editor, a government official, or a school principal. Email writing follows business format conventions. Notice writing requires concise, structured formatting with date, heading, body, and signatory details. Practice all three formats thoroughly.

3. Comprehension

An unseen prose passage of approximately 400-500 words is provided. Questions test literal comprehension, inferential understanding, vocabulary in context, and the ability to identify the author's tone and purpose. Typically includes 4-5 short-answer questions and a vocabulary-matching exercise. Students should practise reading editorials and magazine articles to build speed and comprehension accuracy.

4. Grammar

Grammar carries significant weightage and tests the following areas:

  • Tenses — correct usage of all tenses including perfect continuous forms
  • Active and Passive Voice — transformation of sentences across all tenses
  • Direct and Indirect Speech — conversion with correct tense and pronoun changes
  • Prepositions — correct usage in context (at, on, in, by, with, etc.)
  • Sentence Transformation — changing sentence types without altering meaning
  • Question Tags — forming correct question tags for various sentence patterns
  • Phrasal Verbs — common phrasal verbs and their meanings in context

5. Summary / Precis Writing

Students are given a passage and asked to summarise it in a specified number of words (usually one-third of the original). Marks are awarded for capturing all key points, maintaining logical flow, using own words, and staying within the word limit. This section tests conciseness and comprehension simultaneously.

Exam Pattern 2026-27

ComponentMarksDuration
Theory Paper (Paper 1)80 marks2 hours
Internal Assessment20 marksThroughout the year
Total100 marks

The theory paper typically has two sections:

  • Section A — Composition, Letter/Email Writing (compulsory)
  • Section B — Comprehension, Grammar, Summary (compulsory)

Internal Assessment includes periodic tests, project work, and class participation evaluated by the school.

Prescribed Textbooks

  • Total English (Morning Star) — commonly used across ICSE schools for language practice
  • English Grammar & Composition by Wren & Martin — reference grammar textbook
  • Previous years' ICSE board papers and CISCE specimen papers for practice

Preparation Tips

  1. Master grammar rules first — Grammar is the most scoring section. Learn rules for voice, speech, tenses, and prepositions systematically. Practice 10 sentences daily for each topic.
  2. Read extensively for comprehension — Read newspaper editorials, magazine articles, and short stories daily. This builds vocabulary and improves reading speed for the comprehension section.
  3. Practise essay outlines before writing — Spend 5 minutes planning your essay structure before you begin writing. A well-organised essay scores significantly higher than a rambling one.
  4. Learn letter formats by heart — Memorise the format for formal letters, emails, and notices. Format errors cost easy marks. Keep a template notebook.
  5. Time your summary practice — Summarisation is often rushed at the end. Practise writing summaries within 10 minutes. Focus on capturing key points in your own words.
  6. Solve previous years' papers — The ICSE English Language paper follows a consistent pattern. Solving 5-10 previous years' papers builds familiarity and confidence.
  7. Get your writing reviewed — Ask a teacher or peer to review your essays and letters. Feedback on expression, grammar, and structure is invaluable.
