Tropical Rainforest (Evergreen)

  • Found where annual rainfall > 200 cm: Western Ghats, northeast India, Andaman Islands
  • Trees: teak, ebony, mahogany, rosewood; dense canopy, very tall trees (30–60 m)
  • Biodiversity hotspot: epiphytes, ferns, orchids; animals — lion-tailed macaque, Indian hornbill

Tropical Deciduous Forest

  • Most widespread: rainfall 75–200 cm; trees shed leaves in dry season to conserve water
  • Moist deciduous (100–200 cm): teak, sal, bamboo; Dry deciduous (75–100 cm): mahua, tendu, palas
  • Economically important: teak used in furniture; sal for construction; tendu leaves for bidis

Thorny/Scrub Vegetation

  • Rainfall < 75 cm: Rajasthan, parts of Gujarat, Haryana, UP plains
  • Plants: kikar (acacia), cactus, euphorbias; short, thorny, deep roots for water
  • Adapted for water scarcity: leaves reduced to spines, waxy coating, water storage in stems

Mountain/Coniferous Forests

  • Above 1,500 m in Himalayas: pine, fir, spruce, deodar; between 2,500–3,500 m: alpine meadows
  • Conical shape of trees: snow slides off easily; needle leaves reduce water loss
  • Temperate forests (1,000–2,000 m): oak, rhododendron, horse chestnut in Himachal, Uttarakhand

Mangrove Forests

  • Located in tidal coastal areas: Sundarbans (largest mangrove in world, 10,000 km²), Chilika, Coringa
  • Adaptations: prop roots (stilt roots) for support in waterlogged soil; breathing roots (pneumatophores)
  • Ecological role: coastal protection from erosion and cyclones; nursery for fish and shellfish

Forests and Their Economic Importance

  • Timber: teak, sal, deodar — India's forest-based industry employs 5 crore people
  • Non-timber products: tendu leaves, honey, lac, bamboo, medicinal plants (NTFP)
  • Environmental services: watershed protection, carbon sink, biodiversity, climate regulation

ICSE Exam Notes

  • Map question: shade regions of evergreen, deciduous and thorny vegetation on India map
  • Distinguish: deciduous vs evergreen — deciduous sheds leaves in one season, evergreen does not
  • Mangrove characteristic features asked frequently in 4–5 mark ICSE questions
