Types of Reading Comprehension Passages
- Factual/Informational: articles, reports, notices; direct factual questions; quotes from passage acceptable
- Literary/Descriptive: prose extract, poem; questions on theme, tone, literary devices, character
- Discursive/Argumentative: opinion pieces; identify author's argument, evidence, conclusion
Before Reading Strategy
- Read questions first: 2 minutes; understand what information you're hunting for
- Identify question types: factual (find in passage), inference (deduct), vocabulary (meaning in context), theme/main idea
- Skim passage first: 1 minute overview of structure; paragraph topics; speaker/author identity
Finding Answers in the Passage
- Factual questions: locate in passage; paraphrase don't copy (unless asked to 'quote'); mark relevant line
- Inference questions: the answer is implied, not stated; connect 2–3 passage sentences to deduce
- Never import outside knowledge: answer only from passage; even if you know more, restrict to text
Vocabulary in Context Questions
- 'Find a word from the passage that means X': scan for synonyms; not dictionary definition
- Context clues: surrounding sentence often defines the word; 'The luminous, glowing orb...' → luminous = glowing
- Replace strategy: substitute your word for unknown word; does the sentence still make sense? Test your answer
Title and Main Idea Questions
- Main idea: not the first sentence (that's often a hook); main idea is what entire passage is about
- Best title: captures main idea; not too specific (one detail) or too broad (entire field)
- One-sentence summary practice: after reading, summarise in one sentence; helps identify main idea
Answer Writing Format for RC
- Complete sentences: 'The author believes that...' not just a fragment
- Length guides: 1 mark = 1 sentence; 2 marks = 2-3 sentences; 4 marks = short paragraph
- Quote with analysis: for literary RC, quote the relevant line and then write 'which suggests...'; shows textual evidence
Practice Strategy
- Daily reading: The Hindu editorial, short story, science article; varied genres improve versatility
- Time yourself: RC questions in CBSE Section A (Reading) should take 25–30 minutes for 20 marks
- Mark difficult vocabulary: build a vocabulary notebook from comprehension passages encountered in practice
