Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables — Question Ex 3.7 Q3
Back to all questionsEx 3.7 Class 10 Maths Question 3.
A train covered a certain distance at a uniform speed. If the train would have been 10 km/h faster, it would have taken 2 hours less than the scheduled time. And, if the train were slower by 10 km/h, it would have taken 3 hours more than the scheduled time. Find the distance covered by the train.
Let the original speed of the train be x km/h
and the time taken to complete the journey be y hours. ‘
Then the distance covered = xy km
Key Concepts Covered
This question tests your understanding of the following concepts from the chapter Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables: Class, Maths, Question, Train, Covered, Certain. These are fundamental topics in Mathematics that students are expected to master as part of the CBSE Class 10 curriculum.
A thorough understanding of these concepts will help you answer similar questions confidently in your CBSE examinations. These topics are frequently tested in both objective and subjective sections of Mathematics papers. We recommend revising the relevant section of your textbook alongside practising these solved examples to build a strong foundation.
How to Approach This Question
Read the question carefully and identify what is being asked. Break down complex questions into smaller parts. Use the terminology and concepts discussed in this chapter. Structure your answer logically — begin with a definition or key statement, then provide supporting details. Review your answer to ensure it addresses all parts of the question completely.
Key Points to Remember
- Always show your working steps clearly.
- Verify your answer by substituting values back into the equation.
- Practice similar problems from the textbook exercises.
- Memorise important formulae and their conditions of applicability.

This chapter carries 5-6 marks and is crucial for the Algebra unit. Master graphical and algebraic methods for solving pairs of linear equations.
Quick Revision: Key Concepts
- Unique solution: a1/a2 ≠ b1/b2 (intersecting lines)
- Infinite solutions: a1/a2 = b1/b2 = c1/c2 (coincident lines)
- No solution: a1/a2 = b1/b2 ≠ c1/c2 (parallel lines)
- Methods: Substitution, Elimination, Cross-multiplication
- Reducible equations: Substitute u = 1/x, v = 1/y
Most Important Questions
- Determine consistency of a system of equations
- Solve using elimination or substitution method
- Word problems: age, speed, fraction, geometry type
- Equations reducible to linear form (1/x, 1/y type)
