Question 2(iv)

Simplify the following expression:

(5(\sqrt{5} - 2)\sqrt{2}) (5(\sqrt{5} + 2)\sqrt{2})

Answer

(5(\sqrt{5} - 2)\sqrt{2}) (5(\sqrt{5} + 2)\sqrt{2})

= a2 - b2

= (5)2(2)2(\sqrt{5})^2 - (\sqrt{2})^2 [∵ (a + b)(a - b) = (a)2 - (b)2]

= 5 - 2

= 3

Hence, (5(\sqrt{5} - 2)\sqrt{2}) (5(\sqrt{5} + 2)\sqrt{2}) = 3
