Question 49(b-ii)

Calculate the mass of:

  1. 1022 atoms of sulphur.

  2. 0.1 mole of carbon dioxide.

Answer

(i) gram molecular mass of S = 32

6 × 1023 atoms weigh = 32 g

1022 atoms will weigh = 326×1023\dfrac{32}{6 \times 10^{23}} x 1022 = 0.533 g

(ii) 1 mole of carbon dioxide weighs = C + 2(O) = 12 + 2(16) = 12 + 32 = 44 g

∴ 0.1 mole of carbon dioxide weighs = 44 x 0.1 = 4.4 g.
