Question 1(2009)

CO2 and SO2 gas can be distinguished using :

  1. moist blue litmus paper
  2. lime water
  3. acidified K2Cr2O7 paper
  4. none of the above.
Answer

acidified K2Cr2O7 (potassium dichromate) paper

Reason

There is no effect of CO2 gas on potassium dichromate whereas SO2 turns acidified potassium dichromate from orange to clear green.

K2Cr2O7 + H2SO4 + 3SO2 ⟶ K2SO4 + Cr2(SO4)3 + H2O
