Question 3(i)

Identify the reactant and write the balanced equation for the following:

Nitric acid reacts with compound Q to give a salt Ca(NO3)2, water and carbon dioxide.

Answer

The compound 'Q' in this reaction is calcium carbonate or calcium bicarbonate.

When nitric acid reacts with calcium carbonate, it produces calcium nitrate, water and carbon dioxide.

CaCO3 + 2HNO3 ⟶ Ca(NO3)2 + H2O + CO2

OR

Ca(HCO3)2 + 2HNO3 ⟶ Ca(NO3)2 + 2H2O + CO2
