Given,

Mass = 0.5 kg

Velocity = 2 m / s

Potential Energy possessed by the spring is equal to the kinetic energy of moving trolley.

Kinetic energy of trolley

=12×mass×velocity2=12×0.5×22=12×0.5×22=1 J= \dfrac{1}{2} \times \text{mass} \times \text{velocity}^2 \\[0.5em] = \dfrac{1}{2} \times 0.5 \times 2^2 \\[0.5em] = \dfrac{1}{2} \times 0.5 \times 2^2 \\[0.5em] = 1 \text{ J} \\[0.5em]

∴ Potential energy = Kinetic energy = 1.0 J
