What is GATE

  • GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering): conducted by IITs on rotation; February each year
  • Scores used for: M.Tech/ME admission at IITs/NITs (free with stipend), PhD admission, PSU job recruitment
  • 29 paper codes: CS, ECE, ME, CE, CH, IN, EE, BT, XE, XL, MN, AG, and more

GATE Score Validity and Use

  • Score valid for 3 years; IIT M.Tech: GATE score + interview + written test; stipend ₹12,400/month (MHRD)
  • PSU recruitment: BHEL, ONGC, IOCL, NTPC, SAIL, GAIL, HPCL use GATE score for shortlisting; ₹7–12 LPA starting
  • DRDO, BARC, ISRO also use GATE for recruitment; prestigious government R&D positions

GATE Pattern

  • 65 questions, 100 marks; 3 hours; MCQ + MSQ + NAT (Numerical Answer Type)
  • Engineering Mathematics: 10–15% of all GATE papers; Linear Algebra, Calculus, ODE, Probability
  • General Aptitude: 15% of marks; Verbal + Numerical; relatively easy scoring section

Subject-wise Preparation (CS)

  • Data Structures and Algorithms: most important; 15–20 marks; Trees, Graphs, DP, Sorting
  • Operating Systems: Process synchronisation, memory management, file systems; 8–10 marks
  • Computer Networks: TCP/IP, routing, congestion control, application layer protocols; 8–10 marks

Subject-wise Preparation (ECE)

  • Signals and Systems: Fourier, Laplace, Z-transforms; 10–12 marks; most important for ECE
  • Electromagnetics: Maxwell's equations, wave propagation, transmission lines; 10 marks
  • Electronic Devices: BJT, MOSFET, diodes; biasing, small signal models; 8–10 marks

Study Plan for GATE

  • 12 months plan: 4 months foundation → 4 months subject completion → 4 months revision + mocks
  • Make short notes for each subject: formulae, key concepts; revise 5× before exam
  • GATE Official Mock Tests + Made Easy, ACE Academy, NPTEL video lectures: combination works best

PSU Jobs vs M.Tech Decision

  • PSU: immediate high-paying job; government stability; ideal for those who need income soon
  • M.Tech at IIT: 2 more years + stipend; opens doors to research, better industry jobs, MBA from IIM after
  • Both options: attempt both simultaneously; PSU selection rates are low; M.Tech provides safety net
