What is IIT JAM

  • JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc): IIT/IISc entrance for M.Sc, M.Sc-Ph.D, Joint M.Sc-Ph.D programmes

Eligibility

  • 60% aggregate (55% for SC/ST/PWD) in relevant bachelor's degree; appearing in final year also eligible

  • No age limit; NRI students can also apply with different fee

Paper-Wise Important Topics

  • JAM Mathematics: real analysis, linear algebra, group theory, calculus, differential equations, complex analysis
  • JAM Physics: Classical Mechanics, EM, Modern Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, Solid State
  • JAM Chemistry: Physical (thermodynamics, electrochemistry), Inorganic (periodic table, coordination), Organic (reactions, mechanisms)

Exam Pattern

  • Duration: 3 hours; 60 questions; MSQ (Multiple Select Questions), MCQ, and Numerical Answer Type (NAT)
  • Marking: MCQ: +1 or +2; MSQ: partial marks; NAT: +1 or +2; Negative marking only for MCQ
  • Total marks: 100; qualifying marks: general 35/100; SC/ST/PWD 25/100

IIT Admissions via JAM

  • Each paper has cutoff per IIT; IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras most competitive
  • Available seats: M.Sc Mathematics (IIT Bombay): ~40 seats; Chemistry: ~30 seats per IIT
  • IIT M.Sc fellowship: ₹5,000/month for qualified students in IIT; waived if fellowship from other source

Preparation Strategy

  • Start preparation 6–8 months before exam; use standard textbooks (Griffiths for Physics, Rudin for Analysis)
  • Previous year papers: 5 years of JAM papers; NAT and MSQ questions need more focused practice
  • Mock tests: important for time management; 3 hours for 60 questions requires discipline

After JAM

  • M.Sc at IIT/IISc: 2-year degree; strong foundation for PhD, research scientist positions
  • PhD after M.Sc: CSIR NET, GATE, or direct PhD at IITs/IISc; CSIR JRF ₹37,000/month fellowship
