What is UGC-NET
- UGC-NET: University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test; conducted by NTA twice a year (June and December)
- Qualifies candidates for Assistant Professorship in Indian universities and/or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)
- JRF: stipend ₹37,000/month (year 1–2), ₹42,000/month (year 3–5); highly competitive; only top 6% qualify for JRF
Eligibility

Exam Pattern
- Paper I (General Paper): 50 questions; 100 marks; 1 hour; all candidates must appear
- Paper II (Subject Specific): 100 questions; 200 marks; 2 hours; MCQ only; no negative marking
- Paper I: Teaching Aptitude, Research Aptitude, Communication, Reasoning, Data Interpretation, ICT, Environment
Paper I Preparation
- Teaching aptitude: Blooms' Taxonomy, constructivism, NCF 2005, NCFTE 2009; 10 questions typically
- Research aptitude: research design, thesis writing, sampling, data collection methods; 10 questions
- Reasoning: puzzles, series, coding-decoding, syllogism; 10 questions; scoring with practice
Subject Paper Strategy
- Commerce UGC-NET: Accounting, Business Economics, Business Statistics, Financial Management, Marketing, HRM; ICAI study material useful
- Education UGC-NET: educational philosophy, history of education, curriculum, pedagogy; standard textbooks
- Any subject: solve 5 years previous papers first; understand question pattern; then study standard textbooks
JRF vs Lectureship
- JRF: top 6% cutoff; enables paid research; must use within 3 years; pursue PhD with fellowship
- Lectureship only: between 6–15% cutoff typically; eligible for college/university lecturer posts
- Qualified but no vacancy: NET valid for 3 years; reappear if not selected; each attempt independent
