Why Tears Taste Salty
Tears are a watery fluid produced by the lacrimal glands in our eyes. Apart from water, they contain dissolved salts, proteins, enzymes, and other tiny particles. The main salt present is sodium chloride (NaCl), the same compound that makes ordinary table salt taste salty.
- Sodium (Na⁺) ions – help maintain the balance of fluids inside and outside our cells.
- Chloride (Cl⁻) ions – work together with sodium to form sodium chloride.
- Other electrolytes – such as potassium and bicarbonate, which also contribute to the overall taste.
How the salty taste is produced: When tears flow onto the surface of the eye and later drip onto the cheek, the water evaporates slightly, leaving the dissolved salts behind. Our taste buds detect these salts as a salty flavor.
Example 1: When you cut an onion, the chemicals released stimulate the eyes to produce more tears. The extra tears still contain the same amount of salt, so you notice a stronger salty taste if you wipe them away with your fingers.
Example 2: Athletes who sweat a lot may notice that their tears taste less salty after intense exercise because the body conserves sodium, slightly changing the tear composition.
