CBSE Class 9 Mathematics Syllabus 2026-27 — Complete Guide
The CBSE Class 9 Maths syllabus for 2026-27 has undergone a MAJOR overhaul under NCF-SE 2023. Chapter count increases from 12 to 15, with three topics pulled down from higher classes. A new two-level assessment system has been introduced.
What's New in 2026-27?
- Chapter count increased from 12 to 15: Three significant topics have been added to the Class 9 syllabus, making it more rigorous and comprehensive.
- Arithmetic Progression (AP) moved from Class 10: Students will now learn AP fundamentals (nth term, sum of n terms) a year earlier, building a stronger algebra foundation.
- Areas Related to Circles moved from Class 10: Sector and segment area calculations, previously tested in board exams, are now part of Class 9 mensuration.
- Geometric Progression (GP) introduced from Class 11: Basic GP concepts (common ratio, nth term, sum) are now part of Class 9, a significant advancement in the algebra curriculum.
- Two-level assessment system: Proficiency Level (mandatory for all) + Advanced Level (optional for students seeking deeper challenges). Both are assessed separately.
- Competency-based questions: Focus on real-world problem solving, data interpretation, and mathematical reasoning rather than procedural computation.

Chapter-wise Syllabus
Unit I: Number Systems (10 Marks)
Chapter 1: Number Systems — Review of natural numbers, integers, rational numbers. Introduction to irrational numbers and their representation on the number line. Real numbers and their decimal expansions. Rationalisation of denominators. Laws of exponents for real numbers.
Key Focus: Understanding the hierarchy of number systems (N ⊂ W ⊂ Z ⊂ Q ⊂ R) and proving irrationality of numbers like √2, √3, √5.
Unit II: Algebra (20 Marks)
Chapter 2: Polynomials — Definition, degree, types (linear, quadratic, cubic). Zeroes of a polynomial. Remainder Theorem and Factor Theorem. Algebraic identities: (a+b)², (a-b)², a²-b², (a+b+c)², (a+b)³, (a-b)³, a³+b³+c³-3abc.
Chapter 3: Linear Equations in Two Variables — Standard form ax + by + c = 0. Solution of a linear equation. Graph of a linear equation. Equations of lines parallel to x-axis and y-axis.
Chapter 4: Arithmetic Progression (NEW — moved from Class 10) — Definition, common difference. nth term of an AP: a_n = a + (n-1)d. Sum of first n terms: S_n = n/2[2a + (n-1)d]. Word problems involving AP in real-life contexts like savings, distance, and time patterns.
Chapter 5: Geometric Progression (NEW — from Class 11) — Definition, common ratio. nth term of a GP: a_n = ar^(n-1). Sum of n terms: S_n = a(r^n - 1)/(r - 1) for r ≠ 1. Simple problems on GP, real-world applications like compound interest patterns, population growth, and bacterial multiplication.
Major Change: AP and GP in Class 9 is a significant shift. Students will now have a full year to master sequences and series before Class 10 boards.
Unit III: Coordinate Geometry (4 Marks)
Chapter 6: Coordinate Geometry — Cartesian plane, coordinates of a point. Plotting points in all four quadrants. Abscissa and ordinate. Naming quadrants and axes.
Unit IV: Geometry (22 Marks)
Chapter 7: Lines and Angles — Types of angles. Pairs of angles (complementary, supplementary, adjacent, linear pair, vertically opposite). Parallel lines and transversal. Angle sum property of a triangle. Exterior angle theorem.
Chapter 8: Triangles — Congruence of triangles (SSS, SAS, ASA, RHS). Properties of isosceles triangles. Inequalities in a triangle.
Chapter 9: Quadrilaterals — Properties of parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus, square, trapezium. Mid-point theorem and its converse.
Chapter 10: Circles — Definition, radius, diameter, chord, arc, sector, segment. Equal chords and their distances from centre. Angle subtended by a chord at a point. Cyclic quadrilateral properties.
Chapter 11: Constructions — Bisecting an angle. Perpendicular bisector of a line segment. Construction of triangles (given base, base angle, and sum/difference of other sides; given perimeter and base angles).
Unit V: Mensuration (14 Marks)
Chapter 12: Areas of Parallelograms and Triangles — Area of a parallelogram on the same base and between the same parallels. Triangles on the same base and between the same parallels. Heron's formula for area of a triangle.
Chapter 13: Areas Related to Circles (NEW — moved from Class 10) — Area of a circle, area of a sector, area of a segment. Length of an arc. Area of combinations of plane figures (circles with rectangles, triangles, etc.).
Chapter 14: Surface Areas and Volumes — Surface area and volume of cube, cuboid, right circular cylinder, right circular cone, sphere, hemisphere. Conversion between units. Combination problems.
Unit VI: Statistics & Probability (10 Marks)
Chapter 15: Statistics — Collection and presentation of data. Bar graphs, histograms, frequency polygons. Mean, median, and mode of ungrouped data.
Chapter 16: Probability — Experimental (empirical) probability. Events, sample space, outcomes. Simple experiments (coin toss, dice roll, card draw).

Preparation Tips
- Start with AP and GP early: These are new topics with no prior exposure. Begin with understanding the definitions and formulas, then solve progressively harder problems. These carry significant marks in algebra.
- Master Geometry proofs: With 22 marks, Geometry is the highest-weighted unit. Practice triangle congruence proofs, circle theorems, and construction steps until they become automatic.
- Practice Heron's formula and circle areas: Areas Related to Circles is new for Class 9. Solve sector/segment problems from Class 10 textbooks as additional practice.
- Use NCERT Exemplar for Advanced Level: The Exemplar problems are at the right difficulty level for the Advanced assessment. Solve every problem in the Exemplar for units you want to ace.
- Solve case-based questions: CBSE is emphasising competency-based assessment. Practice reading data from tables, graphs, and real-world scenarios, then applying mathematical concepts.
- Revise algebraic identities daily: Quick recall of all eight identities is essential for factorisation, simplification, and polynomial problems.
- Time yourself: The 80-mark paper must be completed in 3 hours. Practice completing full papers in time to avoid last-minute rushing.
